This study identifies new mesenchymal cell subtypes in neonatal lungs, including a progenitor cell that develops into alveolar myofibroblasts (MyoFB). These findings clarify lung development and myofibroblast differentiation.
Area of Science:
- Developmental Biology
- Cell Biology
- Pulmonary Medicine
Background:
- Alveologenesis is crucial for lung gas exchange, involving septal ridge formation and thinning.
- Neonatal lungs contain diverse mesenchymal cells, including alveolar myofibroblasts (MyoFB) and lipid-rich cells (MatFB).
Conclusions:
- Established a distinct myofibroblast differentiation program in the neonatal lung.
- Expanded the known diversity of mesenchymal cell types in lung development.
- Provided new insights into the cellular mechanisms of alveologenesis.
