Two new UV antimony sulfates, NH4Sb(SO4)2 and Ca2Sb2O(SO4)4, were synthesized. They exhibit distinct birefringence and large band gaps, making them promising for short-wavelength UV optical applications.
Area of Science:
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Solid-State Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Antimony-based sulfates are explored for their unique optical properties.
- Understanding structure-property relationships is crucial for designing advanced optical materials.
Purpose of the Study:
- Synthesize and characterize novel antimony-based sulfates.
- Investigate their birefringence and optical properties for UV applications.
- Elucidate the structural origins of their optical performance.
Main Methods:
- Conventional hydrothermal synthesis.
- Single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
- Optical property measurements (birefringence).
- Band gap determination (UV-Vis spectroscopy).
- Computational analysis (density functional theory).
Main Results:
- Successfully synthesized NH4Sb(SO4)2 and Ca2Sb2O(SO4)4.
- Observed birefringence values of 0.150 and 0.114 at 546 nm, attributed to SbO4 distortions.
- Determined large band gaps (4.32 eV and 4.43 eV), suitable for UV applications.
- NH4Sb(SO4)2 exhibits noncentrosymmetry and a notable frequency doubling effect (0.2 × KDP).
Conclusions:
- The synthesized antimony sulfates are promising short-wavelength UV birefringent materials.
- Structural distortions of SbO4 groups are key to their differing birefringence.
- NH4Sb(SO4)2 shows potential for nonlinear optical applications.
- This research offers insights for developing novel antimony-based optical materials.

Ionic Crystal Structures
Most monatomic ions behave as charged spheres, and their attraction for ions of opposite charge is the same in every direction. Consequently, stable structures for ionic compounds result (1) when ions of one charge are surrounded by as many ions as possible of the opposite...
