Background:

  • The SARS-CoV-2 virus has been linked to a variety of post-infection complications.
  • Audiovestibular symptoms, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo, have been anecdotally reported following COVID-19.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze patients diagnosed with audiovestibular post-COVID syndrome.
  • To identify the most characteristic and common audiovestibular findings in these patients.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 87 patients (aged 20-86) presenting with persistent audiovestibular complaints (>3 months) after SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • Evaluation of hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo symptoms.

Main Results:

  • High-frequency hearing loss (4-6 kHz) was the most common finding, affecting 52 patients bilaterally.
  • Tinnitus was reported by 73 patients (68 unilateral, 5 bilateral), with 61 experiencing new-onset symptoms.
  • Vertigo occurred in 9 patients, all new-onset; acute sensorineural hearing loss was noted in 4 patients during infection, with no complete recovery.

Conclusions:

  • Audiovestibular post-COVID syndrome is a recognized condition.
  • Further research with larger cohorts and longer follow-up is necessary to understand the long-term effects and potential recovery of the audiovestibular system.
