Immunological Memory01:23

Immunological Memory

616
Immunological memory, a pivotal pillar of the adaptive immune system, is responsible for the body's ability to remember and respond more swiftly and effectively to previously encountered pathogens. This remarkable feature is what makes vaccines so effective in preventing diseases.
What is Immunological Memory?
Immunological memory is an integral function of the immune system that allows it to recognize and react more rapidly and effectively to pathogens previously encountered. This feature...

Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

30.9K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

COPD: Pathogenesis and Clinical Features

274
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of lung conditions that progressively worsen over time, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This cluster of diseases collectively leads to a gradual and irreversible decline in lung function over time.
The primary cause for the onset of COPD is cigarette smoking and exposure to air pollution. These hazardous factors initiate a chain reaction within the lungs, resulting in chronic inflammation, damage to the airways, and a...

Classification of Illness01:17

Classification of Illness

7.5K
The meaning of illness is individualized to each person who experiences an alteration in health. In contrast, disease is a medical term indicating a pathological change in the structure and function of the body or mind. It is a condition that has specific symptoms and boundaries.
An illness is a response to a disease in which the person's level of functioning is changed compared with a previous level. The general classification of illness includes acute and chronic.
Acute illness is severe...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-III: Symptoms and Complications.

2.8K
Understanding the variety of primary symptoms and systemic complications that characterize chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is crucial for healthcare professionals.
Symptoms of COPD can be classified as primary or systemic. Primary symptoms relate to reduced airflow, while systemic or extrapulmonary symptoms relate to COPD's broader impact on the body.

Summary

COVID-19 vaccination was associated with a higher prevalence of long-COVID symptoms in adults previously infected. However, vaccination remains crucial for preventing severe disease and death from COVID-19.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Immunology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Long-COVID, or prolonged post-COVID symptoms, affects a significant portion of individuals after SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • Understanding factors influencing long-COVID development and persistence is critical for patient management and public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between COVID-19 vaccination status and the presence of long-COVID symptoms in adults.
  • To analyze if vaccination influences the persistence of long-COVID symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective follow-up study involving adults diagnosed with long-COVID syndrome.
  • Data collected via phone interviews in January-February 2022, including current health status and vaccination history.

Main Results:

  • A total of 1236 individuals were studied, with 543 (43.9%) reporting long-COVID symptoms.
  • Individuals who received at least one vaccine dose (44.6%) were more likely to report long-COVID symptoms compared to unvaccinated individuals (29.4%), p = 0.032.

Conclusions:

  • COVID-19 vaccination in individuals with prior infection and long-COVID was significantly associated with prolonged symptoms lasting over a year.
  • Despite this association, COVID-19 vaccines are strongly recommended to prevent severe disease, reinfection, and mortality.
  • Vaccination is advised for all individuals, including those with a history of COVID-19, to protect against severe outcomes of the viral infection.
