    Background:

    • Type I diabetes mellitus can affect neurological function.
    • Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) assess the integrity of the visual pathway.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the latency of pattern-reversal VEPs in type I diabetics.
    • To correlate VEP latency with the duration of diabetes.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 100 eyes of 50 type I diabetics without ocular complications.
    • Measured pattern-reversal VEP latencies.
    • Analyzed VEP latency in relation to disease duration (1 month to 15 years).

    Main Results:

    • VEP latencies were progressively delayed with increasing diabetes duration.
    • Significant delays became evident after approximately 6 years of disease.
    • VEP alterations appeared to stabilize after 6 years.

    Conclusions:

    • Progressive VEP latency delays indicate subclinical visual pathway dysfunction in type I diabetes.
    • These alterations may reflect changes in nerve membrane balance or demyelination.
