Summary

Background:

Effective therapeutic interaction with elderly residents in nursing homes is crucial for quality care.
Understanding the psychosocial factors influencing nursing staff's approach to elderly care is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between empathy, attitudes toward the elderly, and treatment orientation (custodial vs. therapeutic) among nursing personnel.
To identify psychosocial variables associated with custodial versus therapeutic care approaches in nursing homes.

Main Methods:

Survey data collected from 363 nursing personnel across seven nursing homes.
Statistical analysis to determine correlations between psychosocial variables and differences across staff levels and facilities.

Main Results:

Low empathy, negative attitudes toward the elderly, and custodial orientation were significantly positively correlated.
Positive attitudes were not significantly correlated with empathy or treatment orientation.
Significant differences in empathy, negative attitudes, and custodial orientation were found across staff levels and nursing homes.

Findings suggest that low empathy and negative attitudes are linked to a custodial care model.
Interventions aimed at enhancing empathy and positive attitudes may improve therapeutic interactions with elderly nursing home residents.
