Abstract:
Sarcopenia is a major threat to the health of elderly patients. Elderly patients with refractory wounds are at increased risk of sarcopenia and have poorer outcomes, however, its clinical recognition and management remain inadequate. Based on an understanding of the bidirectional deterioration between sarcopenia and refractory wounds, healthcare professionals should draw on relevant consensus and guidelines, incorporate sarcopenia into routine screening, comprehensive assessment, and dynamic re-assessment, and provide integrated management encompassing nutritional support and metabolic regulation, immune and inflammatory modulation, wound care, physical activity and rehabilitation, and psychological support. Future research and clinical practice, supported by technologies such as artificial intelligence and multi-omics, will be conducted to establish consensus on screening, diagnosis, and treatment for sarcopenia in elderly patients with refractory wounds, thereby improving their clinical outcomes and quality of life.
