Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Background:

The Principal's Goals Scale (SASS, 1999-2000) uses a 4-point response option.
Evaluating the efficacy of response scales is crucial for accurate measurement.

Purpose of the Study:

To test the efficacy and appropriateness of the 4-point response option of the Principal's Goals Scale.
To compare polytomous and dichotomous conceptualizations of principal goals.

Main Methods:

Compared competing dichotomous models against the original polytomous conceptualization.
Utilized the two-parameter logistic (2PL) and Rasch models for analysis.
Analyzed data from 8,524 principals.

Main Results:

The 2PL dichotomous model demonstrated the most optimal model fit.
The dichotomous model showed enhanced accuracy and validity for both item and person estimates.
Results favored the dichotomous conceptualization over the polytomous one.

Conclusions:

A dichotomous scaling system is recommended for future measurements of the Principal's Goals Scale.
This change is suggested to enhance the accuracy and validity of the measured trait.
The findings support the use of simpler response scales in educational surveys.
