Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Medical Robotics
  • Interventional Cardiology

Background:

  • Robotic-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention (R-PCI) shows promise overseas for efficacy, safety, and reduced radiation exposure.
  • Limited data exists from Australian clinical trials or experience regarding R-PCI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the initial clinical experience of R-PCI in Australia using the CorPath GRX robot.
  • To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and procedural characteristics of R-PCI in an Australian setting.

Main Methods:

  • A single-centre experience of 21 patients undergoing R-PCI for obstructive coronary disease.
  • Procedures performed using the CorPath GRX robot, excluding ST-elevation myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock.
  • Comparison of procedural characteristics between early (1-3) and later (4-21) cases.

Main Results:

  • 100% clinical success (residual stenosis <30%, no in-hospital MACE) and majority technical success (no unplanned manual conversion).
  • Later cases demonstrated significantly reduced fluoroscopy time (44.0 vs 25.2 min) and radiation dose (DAP, air kerma).
  • No procedural complications or in-hospital MACE were observed; contrast usage remained similar.

Conclusions:

  • The first Australian clinical experience with R-PCI using the CorPath GRX robot was successful.
  • R-PCI demonstrated high clinical and technical success rates with a favorable safety profile.
  • Increasing operator experience led to significant reductions in procedure time and radiation exposure.
