Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

49
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness01:14

Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness

1.7K
Avoidance learning and learned helplessness are critical concepts in understanding behavioral responses to negative stimuli.
Avoidance learning occurs when an organism learns that a specific behavior can prevent an unpleasant outcome. For example, a student who receives a bad grade may start studying harder to avoid future poor grades. This behavior persists even when the negative outcome is no longer present. Avoidance learning is powerful because it maintains behavior in the absence of the...

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

74
Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed...

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

80
Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the...

Behavior Modification01:21

Behavior Modification

154
Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.
A real-world application of operant conditioning principles is applied...

Frustration and Conflict: Approach-Approach, Approach-Avoidance

62
Frustration occurs when people are obstructed or prevented from achieving a desired goal or fulfilling a perceived need. For example, when someone's input is ignored in a discussion, it can lead to feelings of frustration. Conflict, however, arises from opposing interests, goals, or actions. Conflicts can take various forms based on the nature of these opposing desires or goals.
One common type of conflict is the Approach–Approach Conflict. In this case, a person faces two desirable...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Perceived stress is a global health issue linked to mental disorders.
  • Dysfunctional beliefs are thought to influence perceived stress.
  • Approach-avoidance modification trainings (AAMTs) may modify these beliefs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the feasibility and acceptability of a novel AAMT paradigm (AAMT-DP) using emotional expression.
  • To compare the therapeutic potential of AAMT-DP against a control group and a standard AAMT.
  • To determine if expressing emotions enhances AAMT efficacy in reducing perceived stress.

Main Methods:

  • A new AAMT paradigm (AAMT-DP) was developed, using disgust expression to move stress-increasing beliefs away and positive emotion expression to move stress-reducing beliefs toward the self.
  • The study compared AAMT-DP to an inactive control and a conventional swipe-based AAMT (n=10 per group).
  • Perceived stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale one week post-training.

Main Results:

  • The AAMT-DP intervention demonstrated sufficient feasibility and acceptability.
  • AAMT-DP led to a greater reduction in perceived stress compared to the inactive control (g=0.72).
  • AAMT-DP also showed a larger decrease in perceived stress than the standard swipe-based AAMT (g=0.64).

Conclusions:

  • The AAMT-DP intervention is feasible and acceptable for use in managing perceived stress.
  • Preliminary evidence suggests AAMT-DP has therapeutic potential for reducing perceived stress.
  • Expressing emotions within AAMT may enhance its effectiveness in modifying stress-related beliefs.
