Abstract:
Introduction: The menopause is associated with the onset of a number of psychological symptoms in women, which have been exacerbated by the emergence of the pandemic. Objective: Our study investigated the timing, nature and psychological well-being of the onset of perimenopausal symptoms, taking into account the effects of COVID–19 pandemic (vaccination, infection). Method: In our study, we asked menopausal women about their symptoms associated with the menopause (n = 264, mean age: 50.69 years, SD = 4.88). Participants answered socio-demographic and gynaecological questions and the following psychological questionnaires: Relationship Assessment Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, Satisfaction With Life Scale, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory. In addition, a self-administered questionnaire to explore stressors related to the coronavirus epidemic was included in the questionnaire package and made available online. Results: 12.9% of perimenopausal women were in the moderate depression category, and 8% of participants had major depression. Menopausal women who sought medical help had lower levels of anxiety and depression. When the researchers looked at the effects and stressors of infection and vaccination uptake, they found that social distancing, isolation and fear of infection were the most prominent stressors during the coronavirus epidemic. The group of those already infected had significantly lower depression (t(154,876) = 2.333, p = 0.021) and anxiety (t(186) = 2.050, p = 0.042) and higher life satisfaction (t(186) = –2.283, p = 0.024) than those not yet infected. Vaccination did not reduce anxiety and depression scores. Discussion and conclusion: A more difficult time in life was associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, and lower levels of self-efficacy and life satisfaction. The onset of the pandemic had a lasting, mostly negative impact on the mental health of the study participants. The assessment of psychological symptoms is essential in the care of menopausal women. It can help improve patients’ quality of life. Orv Hetil. 2024; 165(7): 249–259.

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH...
