Background:

  • Family-centered rounds (FCR) are known to reduce psychological distress in families and enhance provider-family communication.
  • Virtual FCR emerged as a necessary adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate family members' perceptions of virtual family-centered rounds (FCR) in a cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) setting.
  • To assess the quality of communication, trust, and compassion experienced by families participating in virtual FCR.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot quality improvement study was conducted involving family members of CICU patients who experienced virtual FCR.
  • A post-ICU discharge telephone survey was administered to assess family perceptions of the virtual FCR experience.

Main Results:

  • Over 75% of surveyed family members reported the highest level of care regarding trust, communication, relationship, and compassion.
  • Specific high ratings were observed for trust (96%), explanation (88%), and care and understanding (89%).
