Natural killer (NK) cells play a key role in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) pathogenesis. Their receptor expression in the lungs is linked to COPD progression and exacerbations.

- To investigate the immunophenotypes, maturity, and functional receptor expression of NK cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of COPD patients.

- Flow cytometry was used to analyze NK cells from peripheral blood in both COPD patients (n=15) and healthy smokers (n=14).

- NK cell phenotypes in BALF showed distinct characteristics relevant to COPD.

- The observed correlations between NK cell receptor expression and clinical parameters suggest their involvement in COPD disease progression and exacerbations.
