Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.0K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Group Design02:01

Group Design

8.9K
The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between...

Drug Dependence01:17

Drug Dependence

1.0K
Medications are typically administered to achieve therapeutic effects. Some drugs can modify an individual's mood and perception, frequently resulting in various enjoyable experiences. However, this can result in drug dependency, a condition marked by continuous drug use despite potential negative consequences. Drug dependency primarily falls into two categories: psychological and physical dependence. Psychological dependence occurs when the pleasurable feelings induced by the drug...

Observational Studies01:11

Observational Studies

8.6K
Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One...

Stimulants01:29

Stimulants

195
Stimulants are substances that enhance neural activity and elevate dopamine levels in the brain, leading to their highly addictive nature. These drugs include cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA, caffeine, and nicotine, each with distinct mechanisms of action and varied health implications.
Cocaine can be administered via snorting, injection, or smoking. It primarily functions by blocking the reuptake of dopamine, resulting in a euphoric high characterized by an intense sensation of happiness and...

Summary

Negative attitudes toward nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and depressive symptoms predict adherence to NRT during smoking cessation. Addressing these negative attitudes proactively in counseling can improve NRT use.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Limited research exists on how initial attitudes towards nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) impact adherence in smoking cessation programs.
  • Understanding baseline attitudes is crucial for optimizing smoking cessation interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if baseline variables predict adherence to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
  • To assess the consistency between participants' stated views on NRT products during counseling and their initial attitudes.
  • To integrate quantitative and qualitative data for a comprehensive understanding of NRT adherence.

Main Methods:

  • A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed.
  • 74 participants in a smoking cessation intervention received behavioral counseling and combination NRT.
  • Poisson regression identified predictors of NRT adherence, while thematic analysis explored attitudes in a subset (n=38).

Main Results:

  • 59% of participants demonstrated continuous NRT use for at least 5 weeks.
  • Negative baseline attitudes toward NRT and depressive symptoms were significant predictors of adherence.
  • NRT adherence progresses through three phases: information needs, readiness, and experiential learning.
  • A high degree of congruence (89.5%) was observed between baseline attitudes and in-session statements.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals with negative attitudes towards NRT are less likely to adhere to its use during smoking cessation.
  • Healthcare providers should evaluate baseline attitudes toward NRT and address concerns early in the counseling process.
  • Proactive management of negative attitudes can enhance the effectiveness of NRT in smoking cessation interventions.
