Summary

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) effectively treated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a 13-year-old girl who experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA). The therapy led to significant symptom reduction, with the client no longer meeting PTSD criteria post-treatment.

Background:

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant trauma leading to severe psychological distress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents.
Effective therapeutic interventions for CSA-related PTSD in young populations are crucial for mitigating long-term mental health consequences.

Observation:

This case study details the treatment of a 13-year-old female adolescent diagnosed with CSA-related PTSD.
The adolescent received Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) as the primary therapeutic intervention.

Findings:

The client demonstrated positive engagement and significant improvement throughout the DBT treatment course.
Following therapy, the client no longer met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, supported by substantial reductions on standardized assessment scales.

Implications:

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) shows promise as an effective treatment for childhood sexual abuse-related PTSD in adolescents.
These findings support the integration of DBT into clinical practice for treating pediatric trauma survivors.
