C Aun, D Thomas, L St John-Jones

    European Journal of Anaesthesiology
    |December 1, 1985
    PubMed
    Summary

Intrathecal morphine effectively manages post-operative pain after open-heart surgery, reducing the need for additional analgesia and sedation. While side effects like vomiting and itching occurred, respiratory depression was not an issue in this study.

    Area of Science:

    • Anesthesiology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Post-operative pain management is crucial for patient recovery.
    • Intrathecal drug administration offers targeted pain relief.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intrathecal morphine for post-operative analgesia in open-heart surgery patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Observer-blind, randomized control trial with 60 patients.
    • Three groups: control, 2 mg intrathecal morphine, 4 mg intrathecal morphine.
    • Patients were electively ventilated post-operatively.

    Main Results:

    • Intrathecal morphine significantly reduced the need for postoperative analgesia and sedation.
    • Respiratory function tests showed less depression in the morphine groups compared to control.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Vomiting and pruritus were the most common side effects (20% each).
  • Conclusions:

    • Intrathecal morphine is effective for post-operative pain relief in open-heart surgery.
    • Lower doses may mitigate risks of respiratory depression.
    • Careful monitoring for side effects like vomiting and pruritus is recommended.
