Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

2.0K
Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine

Background:

  • Post-stroke visual impairment (PSVI) affects over 60% of stroke survivors.
  • Routine visual function assessment is lacking in most stroke units.
  • Evidence-based assessment and management practices for PSVI are available.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline the development and implementation of the first orthoptic PSVI service in North America.
  • To report clinical findings from the pilot program's first year of operation.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot program was established through collaboration between Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Departments.
  • A dedicated referral pathway was created for stroke patients with suspected PSVI to be seen by an orthoptist.
  • Clinical data from the first year of the service were collected and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • 107 visual deficits were initially suspected; 45 additional deficits were identified and addressed by orthoptic assessment.
  • Visual field deficits were the most frequent PSVI.
  • Diplopia, visual neglect/inattention, and reading issues were common oculomotor, perceptual, and functional deficits, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Stroke patients require specialized assessment and treatment for PSVI.
  • Orthoptists are well-suited for PSVI assessment and management.
  • Expanding orthoptists' scope of practice in North America can enhance vision care for stroke patients.
