Background:

Light Attenuation Displays (LADs) are a type of Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Display (OST-HMD) that use pixel-wise polarizing color filters to attenuate light for image display.
Conventional LADs face a trade-off between the number of Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs), color gamut, and contrast, hindering high-fidelity imaging in compact form factors.
Achieving both high-fidelity images and small form factors in LADs remains a significant challenge in display technology.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose a novel LAD design, named StainedSweeper, capable of achieving a wide color gamut and variable intensity using a single SLM.
To overcome the limitations of existing LADs that require multiple SLMs to balance color gamut and contrast.
To enable high-fidelity image display in a compact OST-HMD form factor.

Main Methods:

Developed a LAD system (StainedSweeper) that synchronously controls a pixel-wise Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) and a non-pixel polarizing color filter.
Implemented a high-speed time-multiplexing technique where the human eye integrates the displayed images.
Designed an OST-HMD incorporating a reflective Solc filter as the polarized color filter and a color reproduction algorithm optimizing the time-multiplexing matrix.

Demonstrated a single SLM LAD design capable of producing subtractive images with variable contrast.

The StainedSweeper prototype confirmed the feasibility of the proposed approach for advanced OST-HMDs.

The StainedSweeper LAD effectively achieves both wide color gamut and variable intensity with a single SLM.
This novel approach overcomes the form factor and performance trade-offs of existing LAD technologies.
The developed system represents a significant advancement in creating high-fidelity, compact OST-HMDs.
