    Summary

Bereaved individuals experiencing disaster loss face significant health challenges. Concurrent life stress emerged as the most critical factor impacting depression, somatization, and physical health outcomes in this study.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Sociology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Traditional bereavement research often overlooks non-spousal/non-parental loss.
    • Disaster victim bereavement presents unique psychological and social challenges.
    • Understanding predictors of health outcomes in disaster survivors is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify key variables predicting health outcomes in bereaved family members and friends of disaster victims.
    • To examine the influence of relationship perception, death perception, and social support on health.
    • To assess the predictive power of concurrent life stress on mental and physical health.

    Main Methods:

    • Hierarchical step-wise regression analysis was employed.
    • Sixty-nine bereaved individuals (family/friends of disaster victims) and 50 control subjects participated.
    • Six novel variables were assessed: gender, age, concurrent life stress, relationship centrality, death preventability, and social support.

    Main Results:

    • The six variables explained 48% of depression variance, 39% of somatization variance, and 35% of physical health status variance.
    • Concurrent negative life stress was the strongest single predictor across all three health outcomes for both groups.
    • Relationship and death perceptions, alongside social support, also contributed to predicting health outcomes.

    Conclusions:

    • Concurrent life stress significantly impacts the mental and physical health of disaster bereaved individuals.
    • A comprehensive understanding of bereavement requires considering factors beyond traditional loss categories.
    • Interventions should address life stress and provide robust social support for disaster survivors.
