This study found no genetic link between maternal iron status and preeclampsia/eclampsia. Further research is needed to explore other potential connections between iron levels and this pregnancy disorder.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Maternal Health
- Obstetrics
Background:
- Preeclampsia/eclampsia is a severe pregnancy disorder linked to hypertension and organ damage.
- Observational studies suggest a connection between maternal iron status and preeclampsia/eclampsia, but causality is unproven.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the genetic causality between iron status and preeclampsia/eclampsia.
- Utilized large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) data and Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.
Main Methods:
- Obtained GWAS summary data for preeclampsia/eclampsia and iron status markers.
- Employed the "TwoSampleMR" R package for MR analysis using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method.
- Assessed heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy, and outliers in the MR analysis.
Main Results:
- No genetic causal relationship was found between ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, or TSAT and preeclampsia/eclampsia.
- Results from the random-effects IVW analysis showed no significant associations (p > 0.05).
- No evidence of heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy, or outliers was detected.
Conclusions:
- This MR study did not detect a genetic causal link between iron status and preeclampsia/eclampsia.
- The absence of a genetic relationship does not exclude other mechanistic links between iron status and preeclampsia/eclampsia.
