Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether body mass index (BMI) modifies the association between stroke and depressive symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized cross-sectional data from the 2015-2016 Canadian Community Health Survey.
  • Employed multivariable logistic regression to analyze self-reported stroke history and depressive symptoms (9-item Patient Health Questionnaire).
  • Modeled body mass index (BMI) using cubic spline terms and included an interaction term to assess BMI's modifying effect.

Main Results:

  • A history of stroke was associated with a higher odds of depressive symptoms (aOR = 3.13).
  • Body mass index (BMI) did not significantly modify the association between stroke and depressive symptoms (P interaction = 0.242).

Conclusions:

  • The relationship between stroke and depressive symptoms is not altered by body mass index (BMI).
  • Additional research is required to elucidate the role of obesity in the development of depression following a stroke.
