Background:

Increasing global burden of neurological disorders (ND) necessitates enhanced brain health initiatives.
A critical shortage of neurologists and declining interest in general neurology (GN) pose significant challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the current state of general neurology (GN).
To reflect on and propose future directions for GN in the context of rising neurological disorder burdens.

Main Methods:

A European Academy of Neurology (EAN) task force convened multiple times between November 2021 and June 2023.
Surveys and feedback from EAN members and national society presidents informed the review.

Main Results:

Identified key challenges in GN: definition, practice, education, and research.
Proposed seven initiatives for GN development at academic and community levels.
Formulated 16 recommendations to advance the field of GN.

Conclusions:

General neurology (GN) is essential for affordable and effective management of neurological disorders (ND).
