Abstract:
Secondary coordination sphere ligand effects can be used to direct or organize small molecule substrates at a metal center. Herein, we assess the bifunctional ambiphilic diphosphine, tri-tert-butylboranyldiphosphinoethane (tbbpe) and its ability to influence stereoselective substrate coordination, while appended to nickel. This report takes a synthetic/computational approach to test the impacts and limitations associated with ligand-directed substrate coordination using [Ni(tbbpe)(η2:η2-COD)] (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and ynones (alkynes having an α-carbonyl group at the propargylic position) as model substrates.

Metal-Ligand Bonds
In these complexes, transition metals form coordinate covalent bonds, a kind of Lewis acid-base interaction in which both of the electrons in the bond are contributed by a donor (Lewis base) to an electron acceptor (Lewis acid). The Lewis acid in...
Structural Isomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly, SCN− can...
