    Summary

    Prostaglandin levels in eye vitreous humor were measured. Levels were low in healthy eyes and those with common conditions, but elevated in trauma, endophthalmitis, and aphakic bullous keratopathy.

    Background:

    • Prostaglandins are lipid compounds with hormone-like effects.
    • Their role in ocular inflammation and disease is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To measure prostaglandin concentrations in human vitreous humor.
    • To investigate correlations between prostaglandin levels and various ocular conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Vitreous samples were collected from 41 eyes during vitrectomy.
    • Radioimmunoassays were used to quantify PGE2, PGF2 alpha, prostacyclin, and thromboxane.

    Main Results:

    • Physiological prostaglandin levels were observed in cataract extraction eyes.
    • Low levels were found in vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and cystoid macular edema.
    • Mild elevations occurred in trauma and endophthalmitis; marked elevations in aphakic bullous keratopathy.

    • Prostaglandin levels vary significantly with ocular pathology.
    • Elevated prostaglandins may indicate specific inflammatory or disease states, particularly aphakic bullous keratopathy.
