This study evaluated two experimental resin sealants containing polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMGH) and 1,3,5-triacryloyl hexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (TAT). Both sealants demonstrated antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, with significant differences observed between the two formulations.
Area of Science:
- Dental Materials Science
- Antimicrobial Agents
- Caries Prevention
Background:
- Experimental resin sealants were formulated using polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMGH) and 1,3,5-triacryloyl hexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (TAT).
- The antibacterial properties of these sealants were investigated against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans).
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of PHMGH and TAT on the antibacterial activity of experimental resin sealants.
- To evaluate the efficacy of novel sealant formulations in inhibiting bacterial growth and biofilm formation.
Main Methods:
- Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) planktonic bacteria and biofilm models were utilized for testing.
- Antibacterial activity was quantified by measuring bacterial growth (log CFU/mL) after 24-hour contact with polymerized sealant materials.
Main Results:
- Both experimental sealants exhibited antibacterial activity against planktonic S. mutans and inhibited biofilm development.
- Significant differences in antibacterial efficacy were observed between the two sealant formulations, with one group showing higher mean values.
Conclusions:
- Dental sealants incorporating PHMGH and TAT demonstrate potential for caries prevention by reducing bacterial growth.
- The study highlights the varying antibacterial effectiveness of different sealant compositions, suggesting tailored applications for enhanced cavity prevention.
