Many cancer patients struggle with oral chemotherapy adherence. Factors like healthcare access, cancer stage, and beliefs about medication overuse significantly impact adherence, highlighting areas for intervention.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Pharmacology
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Oral chemotherapy is increasingly used for cancer treatment.
- Patient adherence to oral chemotherapy is crucial for treatment success.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate oral chemotherapy adherence rates among cancer patients.
- To identify factors influencing medication adherence in this population.
Main Methods:
- A descriptive study involving 103 cancer patients.
- Utilized the Oral Chemotherapy Adherence Scale, Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ-T), and Functional Living Index-Cancer for data collection.
Main Results:
- 66% of patients reported good adherence to oral chemotherapy.
- Independent predictors of adherence included access to health services, cancer stage, and the BMQ-T General Overuse subscale.
- Non-adherence was observed in one-third of patients.
Conclusions:
- Difficulties accessing health services, advanced cancer stage, and beliefs in drug overuse contribute to non-adherence.
- Improving healthcare access and addressing patient beliefs are key to enhancing oral chemotherapy adherence.
- Targeting these factors can improve treatment outcomes for patients on oral chemotherapy.
