Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease.
  • Patient interest has prompted an examination of the Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS™) for ALS treatment.
  • The PoNS™ device is FDA-approved for multiple sclerosis gait deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the potential of the PoNS™ device for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
  • To review existing data on PoNS™ efficacy in other neurological conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of PoNS™ technology and its application in neurological disorders.
  • Analysis of the PoNS™ mechanism involving translingual neurostimulation.
  • Assessment of safety, cost, and accessibility factors.

Main Results:

  • PoNS™ utilizes translingual neurostimulation to induce neuroplastic changes.
  • Promising data exists for PoNS™ in multiple sclerosis, stroke, and traumatic brain injury.
  • No pre-clinical or clinical studies specific to ALS have been conducted.

Conclusions:

  • The PoNS™ device has demonstrated efficacy in improving gait and balance in other neurological conditions.
  • Lack of ALS-specific data prevents endorsement of PoNS™ for ALS treatment.
  • High costs and prescription requirements may limit PoNS™ accessibility.
