  • Limited understanding of virtual-first primary care (VPC) implementation within health systems.
  • Need for data to guide the establishment of virtual-first programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the implementation, patient perspectives, and satisfaction with VPC at UPMC.
  • To identify factors influencing early adoption and continued use of VPC.

Main Methods:

  • Web-based survey distributed to 1,420 patients.
  • Bivariate comparisons, cluster analysis, and univariate analysis used for evaluation.
  • Data aggregated on demographics, doctor-patient relations, savings, and future preferences.

Main Results:

  • Females and patients aged 40-50 were primary users with high interest in continued use.
  • 78% felt the physician-patient relationship was unimpaired; 90% saved time; 66% saved money.
  • Health insurance status was not a significant predictor of VPC selection or use.

Conclusions:

  • VPC can be implemented with high patient satisfaction in integrated health systems.
  • The doctor-patient relationship is generally not negatively affected by VPC.
  • VPC is acceptable to most patients, supporting further expansion.
