Ultrasonography

4.5K
Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the body's internal structures. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, making it widely used in various medical fields. Ultrasonography is used to study heart function, blood flow in the neck or extremities, certain conditions such as gallbladder disease, and fetal growth and development.

Assessing Blood pressure using a doppler ultrasound

1.3K
To obtain accurate blood pressure measurements in clinical settings, especially when traditional methods are insufficient, healthcare professionals utilize the Doppler ultrasound technique. This method uses high-frequency sound waves to detect blood flow within the arteries, which is crucial for patients with conditions that complicate circulatory system assessment.

Area of Science:

  • Fetal medicine
  • Cardiovascular ultrasound
  • Pregnancy diagnostics

Background:

  • Establishing normative data for fetal cardiovascular parameters is crucial for early pregnancy assessment.
  • Novel imaging techniques like high-definition flow imaging (HDFI) offer potential for improved fetal blood flow assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish reference values for fetal aortic isthmus blood flow velocity and indices in the first trimester.
  • To investigate correlations between aortic blood flow Doppler profiles and fetal parameters (nuchal thickness, crown-rump length, fetal heartbeat).
  • To evaluate the utility of HDFI in assessing fetal aortic isthmus blood flow.

Main Methods:

  • 262 fetuses were analyzed using 2D power Doppler ultrasound.
  • Aortic blood flow parameters (PS, ED, TAMV, S/D, PI, RI, IFI, ISI) were measured.
  • Fetal heartbeat (FHB), nuchal thickness (NT), and crown-rump length (CRL) were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Gestational age correlated positively with PS, ED, PI, and TAMV, and negatively with ISI.
  • Aortic PS, TAMV, and ISI showed significant correlations with NT, CRL, and FHB.
  • ISI demonstrated a more relevant correlation with fetal parameters compared to IFI, PS, TAMV, and FHB.

Conclusions:

  • Power Doppler angiography with ultrasound can establish accurate fetal aortic blood flow reference values in the first trimester.
  • Aortic PS, TAMV, and ISI are significantly correlated with NT, CRL, and FHB.
  • HDFI is advantageous for detecting the aortic isthmus compared to traditional color Doppler.
