Retrovirus Life Cycles01:10

Retrovirus Life Cycles

43.1K
Retroviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome that undergoes a special form of replication. Once the retrovirus has entered the host cell, an enzyme called reverse transcriptase synthesizes double-stranded DNA from the retroviral RNA genome. This DNA copy of the genome is then integrated into the host’s genome inside the nucleus via an enzyme called integrase. Consequently, the retroviral genome is transcribed into RNA whenever the host’s genome is transcribed, allowing the...

Subviral Agents01:29

Subviral Agents

940
Subviral agents are infectious entities that resemble viruses but lack one or more viral components, such as a capsid or essential replication machinery. These agents include viroids, prions, and satellites, each possessing distinct structural and functional characteristics that influence their mode of infection and replication.Viroids are the simplest subviral agents, consisting of circular, single-stranded RNA molecules without a protein coat. They exclusively infect plants, relying entirely...

Area of Science:

  • Plant Pathology
  • Molecular Virology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Citrus plants host at least eight viroid species, serving as a model for studying viroid interactions.
  • Viroid interactions in citrus can be antagonistic, reducing symptoms, or synergistic, increasing symptom severity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize recent research on citrus viroid interactions.
  • To analyze the mechanisms underlying these interactions.
  • To highlight the role of host RNA silencing and viroid-derived small interfering RNAs (vd-siRNAs).

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of recent research on citrus viroids.
  • Analysis of interaction mechanisms, focusing on RNA silencing pathways.
  • Identification of vd-siRNAs as key players in viroid interactions.

Main Results:

  • Viroid interactions in citrus exhibit complex antagonistic and synergistic effects.
  • The host RNA silencing pathway is central to mediating viroid interactions.
  • vd-siRNAs play a crucial role in modulating symptom severity and interaction outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Understanding citrus viroid interactions is vital for disease management.
  • RNA silencing and vd-siRNAs are critical targets for future research and control strategies.
  • Further investigation into these mechanisms will aid in developing effective strategies against viroid diseases in citrus.
