Insights
The Post Hospitalization Behavior Questionnaire for Ambulatory Surgery (PHBQ-AS) was successfully adapted for Turkish children undergoing ambulatory surgery. This validated and reliable tool aids in assessing post-surgical behavioral changes.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Nursing Research
- Cross-cultural Adaptation
Background:
- Assessing post-hospitalization behavior in pediatric ambulatory surgery patients is crucial.
- Existing tools may require cultural adaptation for diverse populations.
- The Post Hospitalization Behavior Questionnaire for Ambulatory Surgery (PHBQ-AS) is a relevant measure.
Purpose of the Study:
- To cross-culturally adapt the PHBQ-AS into Turkish.
- To evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the PHBQ-AS.
- To provide a culturally relevant instrument for Turkish pediatric surgical patients.
Main Methods:
- Methodological study involving 121 children (1-12 years) undergoing ambulatory surgery.
- Data collection via Descriptive Information Form, PHBQ-AS, and Parents' Postoperative Pain Measure.
- Statistical analysis included factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, item-total correlation, and validity assessments (content, construct, concurrent).
Main Results:
- The Turkish PHBQ-AS demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.801).
- Item-total correlations ranged from 0.458 to 0.753.
- The scale functioned as a single factor, explaining 66% of the variance, with moderate correlation to the Parents' Postoperative Pain Measure.
Conclusions:
- The Turkish version of the PHBQ-AS is a valid and reliable instrument for the Turkish population.
- Healthcare professionals in Turkey can utilize the PHBQ-AS to assess behavioral changes in children post-ambulatory surgery.
- This adaptation facilitates improved patient care and outcome monitoring.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to cross-culturally adapt the Post Hospitalization Behavior Questionnaire for Ambulatory Surgery (PHBQ-AS) to Turkish and test its validity and reliability.
Design:
This is a methodological study.
Methods:
This study was conducted with 121 children aged 1 to 12 years who underwent ambulatory surgery. The data of the study were collected using a Descriptive Information Form, PHBQ-AS, and the Parents' Postoperative Pain Measure. Data analysis and evaluation were performed using factor analysis, Cronbach's α analysis, item-total score correlation analysis, content validity, construct validity, and concurrent validity.
Findings:
PHBQ-AS showed a high level of internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.801). The item-total correlation values of PHBQ-AS were found to be 0.458 to 0.753. PHBQ-AS was determined to be a single-factor scale explaining 66% of the variance in the examined variable. PHBQ-AS and Parents' Postoperative Pain Measure scores were moderately correlated.
Conclusions:
The Turkish version of PHBQ-AS was highly valid and reliable for the Turkish population. A recommendation for health care professionals in Turkey is to use the PHBQ-AS scale to evaluate posthospitalization behavioral changes in children who are admitted for ambulatory surgery.
