Background:

  • Operating room (OR) turnover time (TOT) delays are a persistent challenge in healthcare.
  • Existing efforts to reduce OR TOT using various systems and human factor approaches have yielded inconsistent results.
  • A comprehensive review of methodologies is needed to identify effective and sustainable solutions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review research on interventions aimed at improving OR TOT.
  • To identify and define measures of successful interventions for reducing OR TOT.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines.
  • Literature search spanned from 1980 to October 2022 across PubMed, Web of Science, and OVID Medline.
  • 38 articles were analyzed, categorizing interventions and study designs.

Main Results:

  • Most studies (76.3%) used a pre/post intervention design.
  • Nine intervention methods were identified, with process redesign bundles being the most common (63%).
  • Interventions informed by prospective baseline data analysis (52.6%) were more common than those based on anecdotal evidence.

Conclusions:

  • Significant variability exists in OR TOT improvement methodologies.
  • Process redesign bundles, developed from prospective analysis of the clinical work-system, represent the most effective solutions for OR TOT improvement.
