Magnetic Resonance Imaging01:24

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

5.1K
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical imaging technique based on a phenomenon of nuclear physics discovered in the 1930s, in which matter exposed to magnetic fields and radio waves was found to emit radio signals. In 1970, a physician and researcher named Raymond Damadian noticed that malignant (cancerous) tissue gave off different signals than normal body tissue. He applied for a patent for the first MRI scanning device in clinical use by the early 1980s. The early MRI...

    Summary

A new multimodal surface coil enhances low-field MRI sensitivity by improving radiofrequency magnetic field (B1) efficiency. This innovation addresses signal-to-noise ratio limitations in safer, more cost-effective MRI systems.

    Area of Science:

    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
    • Radiofrequency Engineering

    Background:

    • Low-field MRI offers safety and cost advantages over high-field MRI.
    • A key challenge in low-field MRI is its inherently low signal-to-noise ratio (sensitivity).

    Conclusions:

    • The multimodal surface coil technique effectively improves B1 efficiency and MR sensitivity in low-field MRI.
    • This coil design overcomes tuning difficulties associated with conventional low-frequency MRI coils.
    • Presents a promising advancement for enhancing the performance and applicability of low-field MRI systems.
