Area of Science:

  • Oral surgery
  • Dental implantology
  • Digital dentistry

Background:

  • Retained root tips are a common complication before dental implant placement.
  • Various techniques exist for root tip removal, with varying degrees of invasiveness.
  • Meticulous treatment planning is crucial for minimizing complications and preserving bone structure.

Observation:

  • A 63-year-old female patient required dental implant placement at site #5.
  • Cone beam computed tomography revealed a retained root tip obstructing implant placement.
  • Digital planning was employed to guide atraumatic root tip extraction and simultaneous implant placement.

Findings:

  • The digital planning technique facilitated precise removal of the retained root tip.
  • Simultaneous implant placement achieved excellent primary stability.
  • Follow-up assessments demonstrated successful bone preservation and implant osseointegration.

Implications:

  • Digital planning and 3D surgical guides offer a precise and minimally invasive method for managing retained root tips during implant surgery.
  • This technique preserves bone architecture, crucial for long-term implant success.
  • Integrating cone beam computed tomography and intraoral digital scans enhances accuracy in root localization and implant positioning.
