Observation:

  • One group performed eyelid hygiene twice daily for 1-4 weeks postoperatively; the control group did not.
  • Ocular findings, visual function (including functional visual acuity - FVA), and subjective symptoms were evaluated.

Findings:

  • The eyelid hygiene group showed a significant improvement in the visual maintenance ratio of FVA (p=0.048).
  • Higher-order aberrations of the 4th + 6th order deteriorated less in the hygiene group (p=0.027).
  • Eyelid hygiene was associated with improved surgical satisfaction and reduced corneal staining.

Implications:

  • Eyelid hygiene may be an effective adjunctive measure to optimize visual function after cataract surgery.
  • Implementing simple eyelid care could enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Further research into standardized eyelid hygiene protocols post-ophthalmic surgery is warranted.
