This study found that combining cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with Kundalini Yoga (KY) significantly reduced posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and improved sleep quality in adults. The benefits were maintained at follow-up, suggesting a new treatment option.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Integrative Medicine
Background:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a standard treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Emerging research highlights yoga's potential in alleviating PTSD symptoms, including Kundalini Yoga (KY).
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of an 8-week combined CBT and KY program for treating PTSD symptoms.
- To assess the program's impact on sleep quality in adults with PTSD.
Main Methods:
- A single-group trial involving 26 adults diagnosed with PTSD.
- Assessment of PTSD symptoms (PTSD Checklist-5) and sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) at baseline, post-intervention, and 2-month follow-up.
- Measurement of CBT and yoga homework compliance.
Main Results:
- Significant reductions in total PTSD symptoms and all symptom clusters (intrusion, avoidance, arousal/reactivity, negative alterations) post-intervention (p < .01).
- Sustained improvements in total PTSD scores and most symptom clusters at follow-up.
- Significant improvements in overall sleep quality, sleep disturbance, daytime dysfunction, and sleep quality post-intervention and at follow-up.
- Decreased sleep medication use and improved sleep latency at follow-up.
- Positive correlation between yoga homework completion and improved sleep scores.
Conclusions:
- A combined 8-week CBT and KY intervention effectively decreases PTSD symptoms and enhances sleep quality.
- This integrated program shows promise as an additional therapeutic option for individuals with PTSD.
