In male inpatients with substance use disorder, borderline personality disorder (BPD) and self-mutilative behavior (SMB) are linked to suicide attempts. SMB, anger, and impulsivity appear to mediate this relationship.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Addiction Medicine
Background:
- Substance use disorder (SUD) is frequently comorbid with personality disorders.
- Suicide attempts are a significant concern in individuals with SUD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between lifetime history of suicide attempt (HSA) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), aggression, impulsivity, and self-mutilative behavior (SMB) in male inpatients with SUD.
Main Methods:
- 132 male inpatients with alcohol or opioid use disorder were assessed.
- Evaluations included the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11-SF), and SCID-II for BPD.
- Statistical analyses, including linear regression, were performed.
Main Results:
- Individuals with a history of suicide attempts (HSA) had higher rates of BPD, SMB, aggression, and impulsivity.
- BPD, anger, and non-planning impulsivity initially predicted HSA.
- When SMB was included, it became a significant predictor of HSA, alongside anger and non-planning impulsivity, while BPD did not.
Conclusions:
- Self-mutilative behavior (SMB) appears to mediate the relationship between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and history of suicide attempts (HSA) in patients with SUD.
- Anger and non-planning impulsivity may also play a partial mediating role.
