The Scientific Method01:32

The Scientific Method

226.3K
The scientific method is a detailed, empirical problem-solving process used by biologists and other scientists. This iterative approach involves formulating a question based on observation, developing a testable potential explanation for the observation (called a hypothesis), making and testing predictions based on the hypothesis, and using the findings to create new hypotheses and predictions.
Generally, predictions are tested using carefully-designed experiments. Based on the outcome of these...

Psychology as a Science01:13

Psychology as a Science

694
Psychology, as a scientific discipline, aims to understand the mind and behavior through rigorous and systematic methods. The foundation of psychological research is evidence-based, relying heavily on the scientific method to derive and validate knowledge. This structured approach ensures that findings are reliable, valid, and applicable to broader contexts.
The scientific method in psychology involves six critical steps: making observations, formulating hypotheses, conducting tests, analyzing...

The Wave Nature of Light02:12

The Wave Nature of Light

48.8K
The nature of light has been a subject of inquiry since antiquity. In the seventeenth century, Isaac Newton performed experiments with lenses and prisms and was able to demonstrate that white light consists of the individual colors of the rainbow combined together. Newton explained his optics findings in terms of a "corpuscular" view of light, in which light was composed of streams of extremely tiny particles traveling at high speeds according to Newton's laws of motion.

Hess's Law

There are two ways to determine the amount of heat involved in a chemical change: measure it experimentally, or calculate it from other experimentally determined enthalpy changes. Some reactions are difficult, if not impossible, to investigate and make accurate measurements for experimentally. And even when a reaction is not hard to perform or measure, it is convenient to be able to determine the heat involved in a reaction without having to perform an experiment.

Summary

Humboldtian Science, a concept for comparative research, is clarified by distinguishing it from Alexander von Humboldt's actual practices. His science was individual and less precise than the concept implies.

Area of Science:

  • History of Science
  • Scientific Methodology

Background:

  • The concept of 'Humboldtian Science' is widely used in the historiography of science.
  • This concept is often associated with Alexander von Humboldt and his approach to comparative research across vast distances.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To clarify the heuristic concept of 'Humboldtian Science'.
  • To disentangle 'Humboldtian Science' from Alexander von Humboldt's actual scientific practices.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative analysis of the heuristic concept and Humboldt's individual research practices.
  • Historicization of Alexander von Humboldt's scientific work.

Main Results:

  • The concept of 'Humboldtian Science' presents an idealized model of research that does not fully align with Humboldt's own methods.
  • Humboldt's science was characterized by individual practices, epistemological insecurities, and an erratic writing style, defying the ideal of precision.
  • Historicizing Humboldt's science challenges his exceptionalism and singular status.

Conclusions:

  • Distinguishing 'Humboldtian Science' from 'Humboldt's science' is crucial for accurate historiography.
  • Encourages biographical approaches in the history of science, balancing generalizations with individual research styles.
