Anatomy of the Eyeball01:20

Anatomy of the Eyeball

7.0K
The eye is a spherical, hollow structure composed of three tissue layers. The outer layer — the fibrous tunic, comprises the sclera — a white structure — and the cornea, which is transparent. The sclera encompasses some of the ocular surface, most of which is not visible. However, the 'white of the eye' is distinctively visible in humans compared to other species. The cornea, a clear covering at the front of the eye, enables light penetration. The eye's middle...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) optical texture analysis reveals that defects in papillomacular and papillofoveal bundles are common in glaucoma. These RNFL defects significantly increase the likelihood of visual field sensitivity abnormalities in corresponding areas.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neuroscience
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterized by visual field (VF) loss.
  • Accurate detection of early structural damage is crucial for timely intervention.
  • Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defects are key indicators of glaucomatous damage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To utilize retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) optical texture analysis (ROTA) to assess the relationship between papillomacular and papillofoveal bundle defects and 10-2 visual field (VF) sensitivity abnormalities.
  • To integrate RNFL bundle defect information with 24-2 VF data to predict the likelihood of 10-2 VF sensitivity abnormalities.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study included 841 eyes from 442 participants (healthy, glaucoma suspect, and glaucoma).
  • Eyes underwent 24-2 and 10-2 VF testing and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for ROTA.
  • RNFL defect borders were delineated using ROTA, and involvement of specific RNFL bundles was assessed. Multilevel logistic regression analyzed structure-function associations.

Main Results:

  • Papillomacular (92.1%) and papillofoveal (37.9%) RNFL bundle defects were frequent in glaucoma eyes.
  • A 10-2 VF location overlying a papillomacular or papillofoveal RNFL bundle defect showed a significantly higher likelihood of reduced sensitivity (ORs 18.61 and 20.17, respectively).
  • Overlapping RNFL bundle defects provided stronger prediction of 10-2 VF abnormality than abnormal 24-2 VF points.

Conclusions:

  • Papillomacular and papillofoveal RNFL bundle defects are common in glaucoma.
  • The presence of these RNFL bundle defects significantly elevates the probability of corresponding central visual field test location abnormalities detected by the 10-2 test.
