Background:

The adaptative information processing (AIP) model is central to eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
Complementary theoretical models have emerged to further explain EMDR's mechanisms and applications.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a narrative review of theoretical models proposed as complements to the AIP model of EMDR therapy.
To assess the contributions, convergences, contradictions, and complementarity of these models.
To provide a baseline for future research on enhancing EMDR therapy standards.

Main Methods:

A narrative review methodology was employed.
Seven distinct theoretical models were identified and analyzed.
Comparative analysis of identified models was performed.

Main Results:

Seven theoretical models were identified, all focusing on EMDR therapy's principles, procedures, and protocols.
Several models incorporate concepts from propositional or predictive processing theories.
The reviewed models appear to strengthen the original AIP model, enhancing case conceptualization and treatment planning.

Conclusions:

The analyzed theoretical models offer potential depth and breadth to the existing AIP model for EMDR therapy.
These models contribute to a more precise theoretical understanding of EMDR.
Further research is needed to guide the enhancement of clinical practice and teaching standards for EMDR therapy.
