We describe a rare case where amyloidosis diffusely infiltrated the mesentery. Imaging and surgical findings were initially mistaken for abdominal carcinomatosis, highlighting a diagnostic challenge.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology and Radiology

    Background:

    • Amyloidosis is a rare condition characterized by the buildup of abnormal proteins in organs.
    • Mesenteric involvement is an uncommon manifestation of systemic amyloidosis.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with diffuse mesenteric infiltration.
    • Computed tomography (CT) and sonography revealed findings suggestive of abdominal carcinomatosis.
    • Operative exploration also mimicked metastatic disease.

    Findings:

    • Histopathological examination confirmed diffuse mesenteric amyloidosis.
    • The imaging and operative findings were atypical for amyloidosis, closely resembling malignancy.

    Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of considering amyloidosis in the differential diagnosis of diffuse mesenteric abnormalities.
