Medical students find the current curriculum fragmented, hindering competency-based education. An integrated approach connecting basic sciences with clinical practice is crucial for effective medical training.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Curriculum Development
- Competency-Based Education
Background:
- Competency-based education (CBE) is a globally adopted model in medical sciences.
- Exploring student experiences is vital for refining CBE implementation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the lived experiences of general medical students regarding competency development within their academic curriculum.
Main Methods:
- Phenomenology was employed to explore student experiences.
- Purposeful, snowball, and maximum variation sampling strategies were used for participant recruitment in Iran.
- Qualitative data analysis involved coding, categorization, and discussion.
Main Results:
- Student experiences revealed four main themes and nine subthemes.
- Key themes include a fragmented basic science curriculum, challenging physiopathology courses, and disorienting clinical rotations (externship and internship).
Conclusions:
- Curriculum compartmentalization remains a significant barrier to achieving competency-based medical education.
- An integrated curriculum, linking basic sciences with clinical applications and experiences, is essential for effective competency development.
