Abstract

Insights

High expression of c-MET and RON proteins correlates with unfavorable histopathologic features in lung adenocarcinoma, but not survival outcomes. These markers may aid in identifying aggressive tumor characteristics.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology

Background:

  • Mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) and receptor originating from Nantes (RON) are transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptors involved in cancer pathogenesis.
  • Both MET and RON are proto-oncogenes implicated in acquired resistance to kinase inhibitors in lung cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the immunohistochemical expression of c-MET and RON in lung adenocarcinoma.
  • To correlate c-MET and RON expression with clinicopathologic parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 175 lung adenocarcinoma specimens.
  • Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate c-MET and RON expression.
  • Statistical analyses included Chi-square test, Cox proportional hazards model, and Kaplan-Meier analysis.

Main Results:

  • High c-MET and RON expression showed a significant correlation (P = 0.013).
  • Neither high c-MET nor RON expression was associated with 5-year survival or recurrence-free survival.
  • High c-MET expression correlated with older age, poor tumor differentiation, lymphovascular invasion, and pleural invasion.
  • High RON expression was associated with solid growth pattern and pleural invasion.

Conclusions:

  • Immunohistochemical expression of c-MET and RON may serve as prognostic markers.
  • These markers are associated with unfavorable histopathologic features in lung adenocarcinoma.
