Summary

Subcision combined with suction may improve acne scars faster than subcision alone, according to patient perception. While experts saw no difference, patients preferred the combination therapy for acne scar treatment.

Background:

  • Acne scars significantly impact patient quality of life.
  • Subcision and suction are established treatments for acne scars, but their combined efficacy is unstudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of subcision alone versus subcision with suction for treating facial acne scars.
  • To evaluate patient and expert assessments of acne scar improvement.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, split-faced, evaluator-blinded trial involving 28 participants.
  • One side received subcision alone, while the other received subcision followed by 10 suction sessions.
  • Assessments included validated scar scales (ASSS, ASIGS, QGSG) and subject preference at 1 and 4 months.

Main Results:

  • Dermatologist raters found no significant differences between the two treatment groups at 1 or 4 months.
  • Subjects reported greater improvement with subcision-suction at 1 month (37% vs. 24%, p=0.04) but not at 4 months.
  • Subjects preferred combination therapy over monotherapy at both 1 month (50% vs. 21%) and 4 months (43% vs. 21%).

Conclusions:

  • While objective measures showed no significant difference, subjects perceived faster improvement and preferred subcision with suction for acne scar treatment.
  • Combination therapy may offer a perceived quicker onset of results for acne scar improvement.
