Background:

Urinary incontinence (UI) affects over half of women in the United States.
Many women do not seek conservative treatment for UI.
Understanding factors influencing treatment seeking is crucial for improving quality of life (QoL).

Purpose of the Study:

To assess older women's knowledge of urinary incontinence (UI).
To investigate the relationship between UI knowledge and QoL.
To examine the relationship between UI severity and QoL.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional correlational study.
Convenience sample of 39 older women from two YMCA locations.
Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient used for data analysis.

Main Results:

A significant negative relationship was found between UI severity and QoL (r = -.73, p < .001).
No significant relationship was found between UI knowledge level and QoL (r = .24, p = .13).
Results suggest limited women's knowledge regarding UI causes and conservative therapies.

Conclusions:

Urinary incontinence severity significantly impacts women's quality of life.
Occupational therapists should proactively discuss UI and treatment options with patients.
Enhanced patient education on UI causes and conservative therapies is needed.
