Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

5.6K
The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.

Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

Ethical Dilemmas II

Resolving an ethical dilemma in healthcare involves a systematic approach that considers every aspect of the issue, respecting both the patient's needs and values and the healthcare professional's ethical obligations. Here are potential steps to resolve an ethical dilemma:

Ethical Issues

Nurses are essential in patient care, upholding the ethical principles of their profession and effectively navigating ethical dilemmas. Neglecting ethical issues can lead to inadequate patient care, compromised therapeutic relationships, and moral distress among healthcare workers.

Intelligence

7.3K
The term "intelligence" is complex because it refers to both behavior and individuals, and its interpretation varies across cultures. European Americans tend to link intelligence with reasoning and cognitive skills, while in Kenya, it is tied to responsible participation in family and social life. In Uganda, intelligence is seen as the ability to know the right actions and carry them out effectively, while the Iatmul people of Papua New Guinea associate it with the capacity to remember...

Ethical Dilemmas I

873
Ethical dilemmas in nursing are of utmost importance, as they often arise from the tension between adhering to core ethical principles and the practical realities of healthcare delivery. These dilemmas require nurses to navigate complex situations where competing ethical considerations pull them in different directions.
Let us explore some examples to understand the potentially complex moral decisions nurses face.
Take the case of caring for minors, particularly in areas related to reproductive...

Uncertainty: Overview

550
In analytical chemistry, we often perform repetitive measurements to detect and minimize inaccuracies caused by both determinate and indeterminate errors. Despite the cares we take, the presence of random errors means that repeated measurements almost never have exactly the same magnitude. The collective difference between these measurements - observed values - and the estimated or expected value is called uncertainty. Uncertainty is conventionally written after the estimated or expected value.

Summary

The responsibility gap in AI and autonomous systems (AI/AS) is not due to knowledge or control issues, but a vulnerability gap. Addressing this relational asymmetry is key for trustworthy AI and human agency.

Area of Science:

  • Philosophy of Technology
  • Cognitive Science
  • Artificial Intelligence Ethics

Background:

  • The responsibility gap is a key challenge for AI and autonomous systems (AI/AS) governance and trust.
  • Traditional views link this gap to epistemic (knowledge) and control failures in moral responsibility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To re-evaluate the traditional understanding of the responsibility gap in AI/AS.
  • To explore how insights from cognitive science on human agency can inform AI/AS development and governance.
  • To identify a novel vulnerability gap in AI/AS responsibility.

Main Methods:

  • Philosophical analysis of moral responsibility concepts.
  • Integration of findings from cognitive sciences regarding human agency.
  • Examination of relational asymmetries between humans and AI/AS.

Main Results:

  • Epistemic and control conditions are misleading for understanding AI/AS responsibility challenges.
  • Individual humans face similar challenges with knowledge and control.
  • Instrumentalist views of responsibility, emphasizing agency cultivation, offer promise for AI/AS integration.

Conclusions:

  • A significant, understudied responsibility gap exists due to relational vulnerability asymmetry between humans and AI/AS.
  • Addressing this vulnerability gap is crucial for developing trustworthy AI/AS.
  • Preserving conditions for responsible human agency requires attention to this vulnerability gap.
