Abstract:
Collagen, the major structural protein found in all animal tissues, has a variety of uses in the armamentarium of the plastic surgeon. This article discusses the biologic characteristics of collagen that determine its behavior as an implant material. Clinical applications discussed include hemostatic collagen fleece, collagen sponge wound dressing, composite tissue tendon allografts, injectable collagen, and manipulation of scar collagen.
