Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination02:55

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

90.2K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

30
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Bullying02:04

Bullying

8.4K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

31
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

14.7K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies02:09

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

37.6K
When we hold a stereotype about a person, we have expectations that he or she will fulfill that stereotype. A self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation held by a person that alters his or her behavior in a way that tends to make it true. When we hold stereotypes about a person, we tend to treat the person according to our expectations. This treatment can influence the person to act according to our stereotypic expectations, thus confirming our stereotypic beliefs. Research by Rosenthal and...

Summary

Racial discrimination impacts Black youth mental health. Amygdala response to emotions moderates this, potentially protecting against or intensifying psychopathology risk.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Racial discrimination is a significant psychosocial stressor for Black youth, increasing their risk for psychiatric symptoms.
  • Limited research exists on how amygdala activation patterns may moderate these effects in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between racial discrimination and psychopathology risk.
  • To examine the moderating role of neuroaffective processing, specifically amygdala response, in this association.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal cohort study utilizing data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study.
  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure amygdalar response to emotional stimuli.
  • Self-report measures of racial discrimination, feelings of marginalization, and internalizing/externalizing symptoms.

Main Results:

  • Right amygdala response to negative emotion moderated the link between feelings of marginalization and internalizing symptoms (β = -0.20, P < .001).
  • Right and left amygdala responses to negative emotion moderated the association between feelings of marginalization and externalizing symptoms (β = 0.24, P = .02; β = -0.16, P = .04, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • Amygdala function plays a crucial role in moderating the impact of marginalization on psychopathology risk in Black adolescents.
  • Findings highlight the potential for interventions targeting amygdala response to mitigate adverse mental health outcomes associated with racism.
