Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of metamorphopsia after RRD surgery.
  • To identify predictive factors for metamorphopsia development and recovery.
  • To assess the correlation between metamorphopsia and outer retinal layer (ORL) integrity.

  • 107 eyes with RRD underwent M-CHARTS assessment and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) at 1 and 6 months post-surgery.
  • Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyzed preoperative risk factors.
  • Correlation between metamorphopsia severity and ORL microstructure was investigated.

Main Results:

  • Postoperative metamorphopsia prevalence decreased from 51.4% to 29.9% between 1 and 6 months.
  • Preoperative macular detachment was the sole significant predictor (OR 11.0).
  • Metamorphopsia severity correlated with outer nuclear layer thickness and ellipsoid/cone interdigitation zone status.

Conclusions:

  • Metamorphopsia prevalence decreased with ORL restoration, indicating photoreceptor changes are etiological.
  • M-CHARTS is effective for monitoring and predicting metamorphopsia recovery post-RRD.
