Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

299
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Standard Precaution01:26

Standard Precaution

1.9K
Standard precautions are the minimum infection control safeguards used while caring for all patients, irrespective of their disease condition. They help prevent the spread of common infectious microorganisms to healthcare workers, patients, and visitors in all healthcare settings.
Hand hygiene is the most crucial means to prevent the transmission of disease. Employers are legally required to provide their workers with personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize exposure or contact with...

Pulmonary Tuberculosis V

177
Medical management of tuberculosis (TB) patients involves a comprehensive approach that includes diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The specific strategies can vary depending on the type of tuberculosis (latent or active), the patient's overall health status, and other considerations.
Latent tuberculosis infection occurs when TB bacteria are present in a person's body, but are not causing illness or symptoms. It is not contagious, and preventive treatment is crucial to avoid the...

Preventive Healthcare Services

1.0K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

2.6K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Retrovirus Life Cycles01:10

Retrovirus Life Cycles

45.8K
Retroviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome that undergoes a special form of replication. Once the retrovirus has entered the host cell, an enzyme called reverse transcriptase synthesizes double-stranded DNA from the retroviral RNA genome. This DNA copy of the genome is then integrated into the host’s genome inside the nucleus via an enzyme called integrase. Consequently, the retroviral genome is transcribed into RNA whenever the host’s genome is transcribed, allowing the...

Summary

Primary care centers in high-HIV-risk areas are not adhering to guidelines for offering HIV testing to new patients. Staff were largely unaware of the guidance, leading to zero tests being offered in this audit.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Disease Prevention
  • General Practice

Background:

  • NICE guidance recommends HIV testing for new patients aged 15-59 in high-risk areas.
  • Testing facilitates early antiretroviral therapy, improving patient outcomes and reducing transmission.
  • Normalizing HIV testing can decrease stigma and increase uptake.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To audit adherence to HIV testing guidelines in a primary care setting in a high-risk area.
  • To identify barriers to guideline implementation.
  • To make recommendations for improving HIV testing rates.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective audit of 310 new patient records (October 2021-October 2022).
  • Survey distributed to primary care staff to ascertain reasons for non-adherence.

  • Analysis of patient records and staff survey responses.
  • Main Results:

    • None of the 310 audited patients were offered an HIV test.
    • 75% of staff were unaware of the HIV testing guideline.
    • 66.7% of staff had never ordered an HIV test, and 83% felt unsupported.

    Conclusions:

    • Lack of awareness regarding HIV testing guidelines and local risk is a significant barrier.
    • Current adherence to HIV testing recommendations in this primary care setting is critically low.
    • Further audits in similar settings are recommended to assess the generalizability of these findings.
